I have heard both good and bad about GoDaddy - most folks I've spoken with, including me, are satisfied (but not super enthusiastic) about their service; the few I've spoken with who aren't have had truly horrific experiences.

Another service, somewhat more expensive, is EasyDNS.com. They don't do web hosting, only domain registration. Everyone with their service that I've spoken with, including me, has been really happy with them; as a side benefit, they offer a related service (myprivacy.ca) to provide the proxied registration you mention, so your name and address aren't just out in the public domain.
